Third Time Lucky
A year or two ago I had the embarrassing experience of sitting through two whole sessions of a crochet course - I was too mortified to go back for the third and final class - and being the only person there who couldn't seem to understand a thing. We were all complete beginners and one woman brought along to the second class a HAT she had crocheted! In the meantime, the teacher may as well have been speaking Martian to me, as I proceeded to get everything wrong, repeatedly and embarrassingly. No one else in the class seemed to have a problem, which made me feel even more stupid. It wasn't my first bad experience with crochet either - my Auntie had tried to teach me years before, though to be fair I was very young and gave up quite easily. This time, I Tried Really, Really Hard, and still couldn't do it.
This year, I have seen so many lovely crochet patterns, in particular this gorgeous white blanket with starburst flower squares, which appears in Jane Brocket's lovely book, The Gentle Art of Knitting. Today at my craft group, one of the ladies very patiently spent two hours teaching me and I think I am starting to get it. One day I'd love to be able to post a photograph of that blanket on the back of my sofa. For now, I am painstakingly practising with some scrap yarn. It's a start.

ReplyDeleteIt just takes practice, keep trying. My first crochet projects were really horrible, but then I got better. You will too. :)
ReplyDeleteoh, i hear your pain. i am a knitter and when i went to a crochet class last year i couldn't understand how to do a simple chain. i was awful...back to knitting i'm afraid. good luck with it!

ReplyDeleteCrocheting is a dear memory for me as my Mom taught me. I could never do a pattern, but I enjoy just seeing what I've created.

Fabulous beginning. Your story of crochet class made me laugh out loud! I had the same experience in music class as a child. I was determined to play the flute like my aunt and uncle had, but I could not understand the lessons whatsoever. It was so embarrassing!
ReplyDeleteI would like to learn to crochet. I was gifted quite a bit of beautiful yarn, along with bamboo needles and a book to teach myself with for Chrismas last year but it is very difficult. I never imagined it could be so hard to do. I'd love to take a class and have someone teach me hands-on but I think they'd need to be very patient with me, as well.
I'm looking forward to doing the 52 photo project with you.

How wonderful ... you found the gentle, patient soul that was meant to guide you toward the day that you will hold a beautiful blanket in your hands, the hands that crafted it.
ReplyDeleteWonderful - keep it up! I found youtube videos useful - and haven't managed to make a crochet hat yet (despite many tries - I couldn't get the size or tension or actually anything right!).
